Produce Markets return to The Levee

Following a successful ‘Pop Up Produce Market’ trial at The Levee last year, Council has now entered into an agreement with Slow Food Hunter Valley (SFHV) to hold regular markets in The Shared Zone. The markets will be held on the first and third Thursday of each month, starting this Thursday 6 April from 3.00pm.

Last year’s successful trial demonstrated that regular markets, offering seasonal local produce, would help drive visitation to the space and provide customers with the opportunity to shop for fresh local produce.

Council’s Coordinator City and Visitor Economy Martin Payne says, ‘The fact that we have entered into an agreement is really good news for Council, for SFHV and for Maitland residents. Activation of The Levee through initiatives such as markets features prominently in recent community surveys, rating highly as an item that will further transform The Levee into the city’s premier lifestyle precinct.’

The markets will trade between 3.00pm and 7.00pm during summer, autumn and spring and 1.00pm to 5.00pm in winter.

‘Following a review of last year’s trial it was agreed that trading in the afternoon would benefit producers and customers. These trading hours will also encourage people to visit The Levee later in the day and stay longer, subsequently contributing to Central Maitland’s growing night time economy,’ added Mr Payne.

The first of these markets launches on Thursday 6 April at 3.00pm in The Levee Shared Zone between Bourke and Bulwer streets. It’s anticipated that this market will feature up to ten local producers selling a range of fruit and vegetables, meats, organic foods and more.
